๐Ÿ’ก How GPA is calculated: GPA = Sum of (Grade Points ร— Credit Hours) รท Total Credit Hours. An A = 4.0, B = 3.0, C = 2.0, D = 1.0, F = 0. Honors/AP courses may add +0.5 or +1.0 weight.
GPA Calculator โ€” Frequently Asked Questions
A GPA of 3.0 or above is generally considered good. A 3.5+ is excellent and qualifies for Dean's List at most universities. A 3.7+ is typically required for Magna Cum Laude, and 3.9+ for Summa Cum Laude. For graduate school applications, most programs look for a 3.0 minimum, with competitive programs expecting 3.5+.
An unweighted GPA uses a standard 4.0 scale regardless of course difficulty. A weighted GPA gives extra points for harder courses โ€” typically +0.5 for Honors and +1.0 for AP or IB courses โ€” resulting in a scale up to 5.0. Colleges often recalculate GPA on their own scale, so both matter during admissions.
A typical full-time college semester is 12โ€“18 credit hours. Most courses are 3 credit hours, so a standard load is 4โ€“6 courses per semester. To graduate in 4 years, students usually need 120 total credits, meaning about 15 credits per semester.
One bad semester hurts but is recoverable. Your cumulative GPA is a weighted average of all semesters. The more credits you have completed, the harder it is to move the needle quickly โ€” but also the more stable your GPA is. Use our GPA calculator to model future scenarios and plan your recovery strategy.

๐Ÿ’ก Tip: If your professor uses category weights (e.g. Homework 30%, Midterm 30%, Final 40%), enter each category as a separate row with its weight. Scores within a category should be averaged before entering.
Grade Calculator โ€” Frequently Asked Questions
Standard US grading scale: A = 90โ€“100%, B = 80โ€“89%, C = 70โ€“79%, D = 60โ€“69%, F = below 60%. Some schools use A+ (97โ€“100%), A (93โ€“96%), Aโ€“ (90โ€“92%), and so on. Always check your syllabus for your professor's exact scale.
In a weighted grade system, different assignments count for different portions of your final grade. For example: Homework (20%) + Quizzes (20%) + Midterm (25%) + Final Exam (35%) = 100%. Your final grade is the sum of each component's score multiplied by its weight percentage.
It depends on the weight of the failed test and your grades in other components. Use our Grade Calculator to enter all your grades and their weights โ€” you'll instantly see your current average and whether passing is still mathematically possible.

๐Ÿ’ก Formula: Score Needed = (Target Grade โˆ’ Current Grade ร— (1 โˆ’ Final Weight/100)) รท (Final Weight/100)
Final Exam Calculator โ€” Frequently Asked Questions
The formula is: Required Score = (Target Grade โˆ’ Current Grade ร— Pre-Final Weight) รท Final Exam Weight. For example: if your current grade is 78%, the final is worth 30%, and you want a 90%: (90 โˆ’ 78 ร— 0.70) / 0.30 = (90 โˆ’ 54.6) / 0.30 = 35.4 / 0.30 = 118%. In this case, a 90% is not achievable.
If the calculator shows you need more than 100%, the target grade is mathematically impossible given your current grade and the exam's weight. You may want to recalculate with a lower target grade, or speak with your professor about extra credit opportunities.
Great news! If the required score is 0% or negative, you've already locked in your target grade regardless of how you do on the final. You still need to take the exam (check your school's attendance policy), but the pressure is off.

๐Ÿ’ก Weighted GPA Scale: Regular courses use the standard 4.0 scale. Honors courses add +0.5 (A = 4.5). AP/IB courses add +1.0 (A = 5.0). The weighted GPA reflects course rigor, which colleges consider alongside the unweighted GPA.
Weighted GPA โ€” Frequently Asked Questions
Most colleges consider both. The Common App reports the unweighted GPA from your transcript, but admissions officers also look at your course rigor (how many AP/Honors courses you took). Some colleges recalculate your GPA on their own scale to compare applicants fairly.
For highly selective colleges (top 25), a weighted GPA of 4.0+ is typically expected. For most 4-year universities, 3.5+ weighted is competitive. Community colleges accept students with any GPA. Remember that GPA is just one factor โ€” test scores, essays, and activities also matter.
An A in an AP course gives you 5.0 grade points instead of 4.0. If you earn a B in AP (4.0 weighted vs 3.0 unweighted), it's still a boost. However, if you earn a C or below in an AP course, it may actually lower your weighted GPA compared to earning a B in a regular course.
